Back-Carry Conversations

I’m walking through my mom’s living room with the baby strapped to my back.

Susannah: Mommy, get down?

Me: No, not yet. Mommy’s going to check email first.

Susannah: Me-milk? [her word for yogurt]

Me: No, not me-milk. EEEEEE-mail.

Susannah: Oatmeal?

Me: No, baby. EEEEEE-MAIL.

Susannah: Oh! Emu! Quack, quack.

Me: No, email, on the computer!

Susannah: [brief pause] Get down!

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”
