A Conversation with Jonas

Tonight’s bedtime conversation was just…. great. I’m finding four-and-a-half to be completely challenging in some ways, but the way that boy’s mind works is just as often completely charming. This evening, I was looking at Jonas’ teeth (to see if he’d done a good job of brushing) and started teasing him about whether they were wiggly.

“You are JOKIN’ me, Mama!”

“No, really… one day your tooth will wiggle, wobble, pop! And come right out.”

He goes agog. “But if I have no teeth, I cannot eat any FOOD.”

I explain the concept of baby teeth and he learns the word “deciduous.” We discuss adult teeth growing in the place of the old baby teeth. Then he nods wisely and goes, “Ahhhh, I know what you’re sayin’. And I know what happens next.”

“What’s that?”

“A princess comes to my room. And she steals my tooth for her tooth pocket. And then, poof! There’s magic. And a prize under the pillow.”

I was just cracking up. Apparently he’s heard parts of the tooth fairy story, but he’s fuzzy on the details. (Which is okay with us, because we don’t really “do” tooth fairy/Easter Bunny/Santa/other fictional-gift-givers.)
